I don’t know why, but I am more attracted to older games than newer ones. It could be because they don’t require as much hardware as the newer ones, or because they are more fun to play. But I do know that some of them are better in every way than the newer ones. I always try to find older games that work on either Snow Leopard through Power PC emulation with Rosetta, or intel patches and universal binary updates so you can play them on you new mac, right now. Most of the game posts will be about older games working on newer systems, so be prepared for the nostalgia. The first game that I will be talking about is Quake III and Team Arena for intel macs.

The Quake III: Arena game itself is not free. You must purchase the game (steam, gog) to use the data and play Quake 3 with ioquake3. If you do not want to do that you can play another game made with ioquake3.
When you purchase a Mac with an optional Fusion Drive (currently, a Fusion Drive is a $250 upgrade to the $799 Mac mini), the OS and all of the applications that ship with a new Mac are loaded onto.
Quake has been a great gaming series, hosting conventions every year, and still holding a spot on the best games ever made. But did you know that you can get Quake 3 and Team Arena on your intel mac? Neither did I, until I did a little digging. Power PC users have had this longer than intel users, but there is a site called ioquake that made an intel version of Quake III and Team Arena. Installing the game couldn’t be any easier. Just drag the ioquake3 folder to your applications folder. The Quake III .pak files go in the baseq3 folder and the Team Arena .pak files go in the missionpack folder.
So dust of your Quake III disc, get those .pak files, and relive Quake III and Team Arena on your intel mac!

I have the original Quake 3 arena CD. I moved to OS X a few months ago and I figured now would be a good as time as any to install the OS X version and give it a try. I copied the baseq3 folder off the cd onto my hard drive, and downloaded the latest OS X version (1.31beta).
What I’m wondering is, inside the baseq3 folder are the following files:
pak0.pk3
pak7.pk3
Do I need pak1 through pak6? I remember them from the Classic OS mac point releases, but I was wondering if I needed them for the OS X version.
